As Black business owners, professionals, and community leaders developing and practicing a healthy lifestyle is a huge part of our success factor. We also, unfortunately are often predispositioned for many of the leading debilitating diseases of our society. But- We do not have to fall prey to the stats!

This month we are taking a look at how some aspects of our busy lives might lead to health problems and what we can do to maintain a healthy body and ward off disease. Wednesday, March 28th from 12PM - 3PM Comcast Lends a Hand to a Sarasota Organization– Collecting Books And Computer Supplies For Second Chance/Last Opportunity

Comcast, the leading provider of broadband services in West Florida is hosting a Literacy Campaign benefiting Second Chance/Last Opportunity (SCLO).

Members of the community are being encouraged to stop by and drop off new and slightly used books and computer supplies. The organization is seeking books with related topics such as: critical thinking, job or computer training, money management skills, health and nutrition or GED guides. Bi-lingual materials are also needed. Other items on its wish list include: computer software, clothing (including business attire), shoes, personal hygiene items and shelving.

SCLO is a not-for-profit organization that targets services to youth and their families with no or low income. Its mission is to provide a variety of training programs, street outreach, and direct assistance to at-risk teens, teen mothers, low income families and the homeless. SCLO helps young people gain the skills and confidence needed to make positive choices in their lives and avoid the traps that lead to homelessness.


Sunday, April 1, 2007 12PM - 8PM "Giving Hunger the Blues" to Benefit All Faiths Food Bank and the Child Protection Center

This is a family entertainment and charity event to raise money and awareness for hunger in our community … and to help in another worthy cause – the prevention of child abuse in our county. • Live bands on 2 stages including one stage exclusively for youth bands • Dance demos • Martial arts • Games and activities for children • Delicious food and beverages

From a modest beginning eleven years ago as an extension of the annual Taste of The Nation event, “Giving Hunger The Blues” has grown each year and raised over half a million dollars. Local musicians, bands, performers and artists donate their talents and time every year.This event is wholly volunteer driven.

April 13 - 22, 2007 Sarasota Film Festival Adds Afrocentric Based Films

The Sarasota Film Festival (SFF) is quickly rising to the top of festivals throughout the world. This year they are presenting an excellent slate of 200+ films. Included in its offer are a number of Afrocentric based films along with several Black Filmmakers participating in festival events.  

Community outreach programs designed to inspire and encourage young people are important part of this year's festival. SFF Community Outreach  is featuring a film called "The Hip Hop Project" scheduled for Saturday, April 13th @ 2:15 pm, and Sunday, April 15 @ 8:45 pm. The Hip Hop Project features Bruce Willis, alongside MTV's Sway and Hip-Hop pioneers Russell Simmons and Doug E. Fresh, and chronicles several years in the life of New York City teenagers who transform their life stories into compelling works of art, led by a formerly homeless teenager, Chris "Kazi" Rolle. Rolle founded the award-winning Hip-Hop Project, an organization designed to give young people the opportunity to express themselves in positive ways through rap music. Hans Wohlgefahrt, SFF Community Outreach Director is also seeking to work with a local youth organization willing to be an integral part of this outreach effort. 

Charles R. Stephens, Alltel Communications Business Solutions Representative and BBPN Member, will be working closely with Hans Wohlgefahrt, SFF Community Outreach Director to help generate an audience to support the Black Filmmakers. Let's make a statement and support their efforts.

Saturday, April 14, 2007 Honors for Buck O'Neil, Former Negro Leagues Player, Manager, the Major Leagues' First Black Coach and Sarasota Native

Roy McBean, a longtime Sarasota friend of Buck O'Neil, whose idea it was to honor him is joined by the Sarasota Reds, other community organizations and organizers to honor Buck O'Neil who died last October. Filmmaker Ken Burns will also help celebrate the life and legacy of the baseball legend at a series of community events in Sarasota on April 14.

Events of the Day

1PM - Plaque Dedication in O'Neil's Honor. Newtown Estates Park, 2800 Newtown Blvd., Sarasota, 34235. The public is welcome at this free event.

3:30PM - Buck O'Neil Memorial Dedication. Burns will help dedicate a memorial to O'Neil at the Buck O'Neil Baseball Complex in Twin Lakes Park, 6700 Clark Road. The event is free and open to the public.

5 PM - Ed Smith Stadium - 12th Street. The ceremonies will precede a 6 p.m. Florida State League game between the Sarasota Reds and the Tampa Yankees. Players will wear uniforms of Negro Leagues teams, including the Kansas City Monarchs, Buck's former team, which he played for and managed. Also, several ex-Negro Leagues' players will be introduced and available for autographs. Tickets to the game will cost $5 and $6.

April 14 - May 13, 2007 Buck O'Neil Exhibit - Sarasota County Visitors Center and History Center Museum. An exhibit featuring Buck O'Neil, loaned by the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City, will be on display through May 13 at the Sarasota County Visitors Center and History Center Museum, 701 N. Tamiami Trail. Hours are Monday-Sat 10-4, and Sunday 12-3. A grant from the Friends of the History Center helped cover the shipping costs. Admission to the "Buck...right on time" exhibit is free.

Except for the baseball game at Ed Smith, all the day's activities will be free and open to the public. This is a great opportunity to spend quality family time and gain valuable lessons in Black History. Let's show our support! Embracing Our Differences features 39 billboard-sized images and quotations created by artist and school children from across the country. Each creation is a unique interpretation of the celebration's theme "enriching lives through diversity."
