April 13 - 22, 2007 Sarasota Film Festival Adds Afrocentric Based Films

The Sarasota Film Festival (SFF) is quickly rising to the top of festivals throughout the world. This year they are presenting an excellent slate of 200+ films. Included in its offer are a number of Afrocentric based films along with several Black Filmmakers participating in festival events.  

Charles R. Stephens, Alltel Communications Business Solutions Representative and BBPN Member, will be working closely with Hans Wohlgefahrt, SFF Community Outreach Director to help generate an audience to support the Black Filmmakers.

Saturday, April 14, 2007 Honors for Buck O'Neil, Former Negro Leagues Player, Manager, the Major Leagues' First Black Coach and Sarasota Native

Roy McBean, a longtime Sarasota friend of Buck O'Neil, whose idea it was to honor him is joined by the Sarasota Reds, other community organizations and organizers to honor Buck O'Neil. O’Neil, who died last October at age 94, grew up in Sarasota, where he worked in the celery fields east of town. He went on to become a standout in the Negro Leagues in the 1930s and 1940s. Later, when
Major League Baseball was integrated, he became the first black coach and one of the first black scouts. Among the players he scouted were Ernie Banks, Lou Brock and Joe Carter. Saturday, April 14, 2007 6PM Robin Givens to Appear - Bradenton Prep Showtoppers

Robin Givens, TV actress will appear for a meet and greet reception at the Bradenton Prep Showstoppers performance of "Grease" at the Manatee Players Riverfront Theater, 102 Old Main St., Bradenton.

The reception will last until 6:30 p.m.; the musical will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25. Seats are limited. Tickets purchased will be entered into a drawing to win Robin Givens' autographed book:  "Grace Will Lead Me Home", available June 2007.

Tuesday, April 17, 2007 - Sarasota Area Sports Authority Announces College Tuition Grant Program

2007 Sarasota Area Sports Authority College Tuition Grant Program. A limited number of $1,000 grants are available for Fall 2007 to qualified applicants based on financial need and demonstrated athletic commitment.

Qualifications: Sarasota or Manatee County male or female senior athletes who can demonstrate financial need to attend college. Applicants must be planning to attend college in Fall 2007 and will be required to submit acceptance letter and college name to receive tuition grant. Grants will be submitted directly to the student athlete’s college of choice to be applied to that year’s tuition.

CRITERIA: Demonstrated commitment to sports and athletic advancement this person has portrayed. Demonstrated financial need and explaining the student/family financial situation and education goals of the athlete. This can be done on the application form or in a letter accompanying the application form and can be submitted by the athlete, a parent, legal guardian, coach or other close family member or friend on the athlete’s behalf. Letter of support for the athlete from their coach or high school counselor. Name and address of the college or university that the athlete is planning to attend. Maintained 2.5 GPA or higher

APPLICATION FORMS: To apply, an athlete can submit or have an application form submitted on his or her behalf. Independent Black Filmmaker has secured an option to the play "The gg Monologues" to turn it into an episodic TV series. Terry "Tbone" Rhodes is looking for serious investors to support the production of the first five episodes. The shows will be broadcast on cable and internet outlets.

Thursday, May 3 - 19, 2007 Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe Presents "Once Upon This Island"

ONCE ON THIS ISLAND, The Little Mermaid. Set in Haiti this bittersweet romance tells in Calypso rhythms with soaring melodies and sultry dances the story of Ti Moune, a poor orphan girl and her search for romance and happiness.

This folk tale, which will delight both young and old, opened on Broadway in 1990 and was nominated for 8 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book. The WBTT production is directed by Reggie Kelly (who directed the sell-out production of DREAMGIRLS) and will have in its cast company members Whitney Reshard and Porter Anderson.
