Tuesday, May 1, 2007 Independent Black Filmmaker Teams with "The gg Monologues" to Produce Television Series

Independent Black Filmmaker has secured an option to the play "The gg Monologues" to turn it into an episodic TV series. Terry "Tbone" Rhodes is looking for serious investors to support the production of the first five episodes. The shows will be broadcast on cable and internet outlets.

Thursday, May 3 - 19, 2007 Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe Presents "Once Upon This Island"

ONCE ON THIS ISLAND, The Little Mermaid. Set in Haiti this bittersweet romance tells in Calypso rhythms with soaring melodies and sultry dances the story of Ti Moune, a poor orphan girl and her search for romance and happiness.

This folk tale, which will delight both young and old, opened on Broadway in 1990 and was nominated for 8 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book. The WBTT production is directed by Reggie Kelly (who directed the sell-out production of DREAMGIRLS) and will have in its cast company members Whitney Reshard and Porter Anderson.

At the HISTORIC ASOLO Theatre , 5401 Bay Shore Rd., Sarasota (located inside the Visitors' Center of the John and Mable Ringling Museum), 5/3- 5/19, 2007 (TH, FRI, SAT,) at 8:00 PM, 5/5, 5/12 and 5/19 (SAT) at 2:00 PM. Friday, May 25, 2007 9AM - 4PM Get On Board - Leadership Engagement Training

Using your talents to serve on a non-profit organization's board of directors can be an incredibly rewarding experience. The Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce is partnering with the Community Foundation of Sarasota County's Nonprofit Resource Center, the Young Professionals Group (YPG) and Leadership Sarasota County (LSC) programs to present "Get on Board! Leadership Engagement Training," an interactive, fast-paced workshop for young professionals and others who are currently serving on boards of directors or who want to serve on boards.

National governance expert Dr. Sandra Hughes will share the roles and responsibilities of board members, best practices, financial and legal issues, board structure and governance, effective fundraising, planning and evaluation techniques, and committee structures. Local volunteer leadership opportunities to serve will also be discussed.

The workshop will take place on Friday, May 25, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Community Foundation of Sarasota County (2635 Fruitville Road). Cost is $75 for paid YPG members and LSC alumni; $100 for others. To register, e-mail ingrid@cfsarasota.org. Call Susie at 941.556.7104 for more information.

Federal Government Need Air Traffic Controllers

The Federal Aviation Association is taking applications for air traffic controller school. Persons in the age group (under 31), prior military personnel, previous air traffic controllers could qualify. salaries for these positions could reach over $100,000 with benefits in about 3 years. You need only a high school diploma to apply and credit is given for college on the exam. They need to go to http://www.faa.gov/jobs/job_opportunities/airtraffic_controllers/ for details and to fill out the application immediately - whether you can attend immediately or not - the federal government may take several months to call. The key is to apply NOW.

Community Foundation Names Unsung Hero - Eleanor Ball
Congratulations, Eleanor Ball of Sarasota, a retired manager of hospitality services for Sarasota Memorial Hospital was one of three outstanding community volunteers recognized by the Community Foundation and the Wilson-Wood Foundation for their unselfish service to a variety of charitable causes. Eleanor currently serves as the volunteer director of church ministries for the Truvine Baptist Church in Newtown. Eleanor is a cancer prevention educator, health and wellness advocate and disaster relief volunteer who educates and inspires teens and adults throughout the Newtown community.
