BLACK BUSINESS PROFESSIONAL NETWORK  07-02-2007
EMPOWERED MINDS

Dear BBPN Members,

As we move towards July 4th we are reminded that in 1865, Galveston, Texas the observance of June19th as the African American Emancipation Day was celebrated across the United States. Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. While celebrating is top of mind for all Americans during this time regardless of the respective historical dates it is also a time for assessment, self-improvement and for planning for the future.

Business and personal success includes the ability to periodically self- assess for personal and professional improvement, professional development, and success. The key to doing this lies in our ability to ask ourselves the right questions. The Black Business Professional Network operates on four guiding principles (Leadership, Unity, Knowledge, Excellence). A quick-hit personal and professional assessment might include these questions:

Leadership
In your business and/or professional life how does your behavior demonstrate leadership? Do others listen to you, see your as someone to immulate. Do you have a place at the table and when you sit there is your voice heard?

Unity
What actions have you taken to show that you strive to partner and support others, or do you believe that there is not enough to go around preferring to "keep you secrets" to yourself? Do you believe your talents are unique? Are you open to sharing your talent, time and treasure with others not just for your success but more importantly - for the success of others?

Knowledge
What actions indicate that you have a learning goal orientation to your business and/or profession? How do you seek to continuously gain information, general and specific to your area of expertise. Do you seek knowledge from others, believing that learning is a life-long habit?

Excellence
How do you demonstrate pride of ownership and superior quality/service in your business or profesision? Is your place of business, your personal appearance, your services/products exemplifying the best?

These are just a few of the questions we can periodically ask ourselves to assess where we are on the road to business and personal success. These and other questions can also be great ice-breakers at your next networking event. People love to talk about their star qualities and what better "best practices" could there be?
