Susan Turnbull, Vice Chair of the Democratic National Committee will speak in Sarasota on Monday about women's issues in politics. The event will be held at the Bijou Restaurant downtown Sarasota. Thursday, July 10, 2008 10:00AM-noon or 5:00PM-7PM Public Workshops on Grant Funding for Transportation Services (SCAT)

SCAT is conducting two workshops to discuss opportunities for Grant funding related to transportation to work for the unemployed and for persons with disabilities. If you are interested, please attend. Interested representatives of public, private, and non-profit transportation and human services providers as well as the public at large are welcomed to attend. Others who may also be interested in coordinating public transportation services and improvements that benefit elderly, disabled, low-income, and unemployed populations should plan to attend.

Friday, July 11- Saturday July 12, 2008 8:00AM-5:00PM Miami Free Trade Days Convention

The convention will feature a series of workshops on issues such as Exports and Import focus on business development, growth international strategies, sales and marketing, motivation, life and work balance, financing, regulations, franchise opportunities, and Free Trade Agreement's issues with South America and Central America. There will also be a panel with expertise, along with an initiative on the official campaign for 500,000 signatures from U.S Minority Companies supporting the Free Trade Agreement with Colombia, all of which are part of the activities during the two days event.

Sarasota's Senior Friendship Center will hold a conference on Smart & Safe Living during July. The conference will be presented in three Friday sessions. Tuesday, July 15, 2008 – 5:30PM Eckerd College Program for Experienced Learners

Eckerd College Program for Experienced Learners will offer a free information session for adults 23 years or older considering earning a bachelor’s degree in a quality liberal arts program. Classes are offered in downtown Sarasota and various locations throughout the Tampa Bay area. The Program for Experienced Learners offers evening and weekend classes, accelerated terms, and the opportunity to earn credit for prior learning. Financial aid is available to qualified students.

A separate committee of the New Beginning for Newtown Initiative has been formed to discuss substance abuse issues and research and explore the effectiveness of alternative treatments. The meetings will be held every third Tuesday of the month. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at at the Human Services Center located at 1750 17th Street on the corner of 17th Street and Osprey Avenue, in building(J). Discussion topics include:

  • Identify current treatments available to Newtown residents
  • Asses the mindset of those residents-(are they willing to participate?)
  • Discuss ways to connect residents to treatments.
  • Encourage the participation of more Newtown Residents in this discussion

A community action forum will follow the seminar from 10:30 am to 12pm. On July 23 at 9pm and July 24 at 9pm, CNN will premier a series, 'Black in America with Soledad O'Brien. Watch it with your children, especially your sons, if you have any, uninterrupted. The aforementioned statistic and many others will be revealed during the series.

On Monday the series will focus on Women and Families and Tuesday is dedicated entirely to the plight of the Black Man in America.

Syracuse University has 10 Full Rides for African American Men and Women Interested in Becoming Architects

Syracuse University's School of Architecture is desperately seeking young men and women of color interested in pursuing a five-year professional degree in Architecture. The Dean says that he's deeply committed to bringing diversity to his field and has scholarship money set aside to fully cover education costs for 10 students. He says that Hispanic enrollment in the school has increased substantially, but it's been harder to attract Blacks.
